The coalition for civil society groups, COCSG, has called for caution
in the condemnation of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai
over his alleged ownership of $1.5 million worth of mansion in Dubai,
saying the facts of the matter suggest he duly declared the building as
required by law.
At a press conference in Abuja at the weekend,
COCSG’s president, Comrade Bassey Etuk, called on President Muhammadu
Buhari to continue the fight against corruption despite obvious
distractions as it is clear that opportunities would continually be
exploited to drag the anti-corruption programme of this administration
into the mud.
“The recent alleged act of corruption against the
incumbent Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai in connection
with the ownership of two Dubai mansions, which has generated a lot of
furore came to our attention with great optimism that alas, there will
be a scapegoat in this government who will be used as an example to
serve as deterrent to others.
“However, our restrain in not
hastily making a public statement was predicated on the sensitivity of
the office concerned in light of the many security challenges facing the
country such as the ongoing war against terrorism, the Niger-Delta
militancy, the recent rumour of coup and the clash between the military
and Shiite sect to mention but a few with the military at the centre of
it all.
It is therefore pertinent not to be swayed by primordial
sentiments but rather guided by the sanctity of justice, which explains
the reason for our meticulous independent findings with our affiliate
civil society organization in Dubai in order to ascertain the truth
before stating our position,” the group stated.
